| Witchcraft
& Paganism: Divination |
|
There are many
different methods of divination used by pagans. The most popular
of these is the Tarot. Also covered here is pendulum dowsing.
|
Each Tarot
deck consists of 78 cards, 22 'Major Arcana' and 56 'Minor
Arcana'
Here are my favourite decks:

Summary |
Rider
Waite Tarot
by Arthur
Waite & Pamela Coleman Smith
 |
The
world's most popular tarot deck illustrated in full
color and accompanied by a 44-page instruction
booklet.
This is a really good deck for those new to Tarot as
it is the one most often featured in books on the
subject.
Most other decks are based in the symbolism of the
Rider deck. |
Egyptian
Tarot
by Silvana
Alasia |
This
deck better suits someone who is more experienced
with the Tarot. The artwork on this tarot deck
faithfully reproduces the hieroglyphic art of
ancient Egypt.
Many of the minor Arcana look very similar to one
another as with the Tarot
de Marseilles which can impede readings. |
The
Mythic Tarot
Juliet
Sharman-Burke
|
This
pack's art is based in Greek mythology. Lovely art,
very simplistic card design. |
Thoth Tarot
Aleister Crowley
 |
Classic deck designed by
Aleister Crowley. In my opinion one of, if not the,
most beautiful tarot decks ever put together.
If you like this deck but don't quite understand the
qabalistic symbolism have a look at 'Keywords
for the Crowley Tarot' or try the 'Liber
T' deck instead. |
The
New Orleans Voodoo Tarot
by Martinie & Glassman |
A beautiful deck plus
the book is one of the best books available on the
practise of voodoo/vodoun. |
|
The
important thing in choosing your tarot deck is that
it speaks to you. If you feel a connection with the
imagery or source theme of a particular deck, then
go with it. You'll have clearer readings.
Other Tarot decks
A background knowledge of the tarot is
important, one of the best books I've
found on the subject is 'Collins
Gem Tarot'
by Rowena Stuart.

Oracle decks
work in a similar way to Tarot decks, though each one is
individual. Where all Tarot packs contain the same cards,
oracle decks do not.

Moon
Oracle
Caroline
& John Astrop
 |
The
Moon Oracle is a divinatory system devised around
the moon. The set consists of a 72 card deck and an instruction
book. The cards are well illustrated and are divided
into three types; moon phase cards, goddess cards
and moon mansion cards. The Moon Oracle allows you
to make readings with spreads, as with tarot, and
read the cards in relation to one other. I found it
quite easy to learn and use as it is based on well
known moon phase correspondences and goddesses. I
made some quite accurate readings with it from the
start and as you become more practiced it is
possible to use more complicated spreads and
techniques.

I also make use of
the pendulum, which can be used to give simple
yes/no answers quickly or complicated answers if you
are prepared to spend time with it.
